Summary Statement

The Inle Lake region, severely impacted by the 2024 floods and 2025 earthquake, faces ecological degradation, infrastructure loss, and livelihood disruption. This report outlines key impacts

Abstract

Inle Lake, one of Myanmar’s most important ecological and cultural landscapes, has faced two severe disasters within a short span: the September 2024 flooding from Typhoon Yagi and the March 2025 earthquake. These events caused widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, farmland, and the lake’s fragile ecosystem, intensifying the vulnerability of already stressed communities. This report, Inle Lake Post-Disaster Environmental Assessment and Rehabilitation Plan, provides a comprehensive evaluation of these compounded impacts. It highlights critical issues such as environmental degradation, water contamination, infrastructure collapse, displacement, and threats to public health and livelihoods. The findings underscore that without swift, coordinated, and well-resourced interventions, Inle Lake risks long-term ecological decline, economic setbacks, and worsening living conditions for tens of thousands of residents. However, these challenges also present opportunities to rebuild stronger and more resilient systems. The report offers evidence-based recommendations to guide recovery, emphasizing environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive development. It serves as a roadmap for policymakers, donors, and local stakeholders to collaborate on protecting Inle Lake’s ecosystem, strengthening disaster resilience, and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
