Abstract

This session explores how Health Impact Assessment (HIA) can help private sector companies manage their health impacts on communities, with the overarching aim of enhancing wellbeing and advancing sustainable development. It provides an overview of how the private sector influences public health and the potential role of HIA practice in addressing these effects. Based on the examples of several multinational energy companies and author’s views, the session introduces key components of effective HIA implementation in energy companies, including leadership commitment, defined roles and supportive organizational management structures. The session discusses benefits of HIA process challenges and opportunities with adopting HIA across the private sector. It emphasizes the potential for HIA to foster corporate social responsibility (CSR), and to contribute meaningfully to public health and sustainable development by integrating HIA into business decision-making processes.
