Summary Statement

One of three Indigenous Peoples in Canada, The Red River Métis have developed a land use and occupancy database that blends traditional knowledge and academically and legally defendable methodology.

Abstract

The Red River Métis are one of three constitutionally recognized Indigenous groups in Canada and the largest self-governing Indigenous entity in North America. For decades our government has been collecting our Citizen’s land use and occupancy information through interviews, surveys, and ground-truthing. This data is amassed in a protected database and accessed through the ArcGIS platform and serves as a powerful analytical tool for our Nation. The database can be used to demonstrate potential impacts to our Indigenous rights by proposed projects, it helps to inform environmental and heritage resource studies, and it empowers our Nation to explore and predict changing habitat ranges due to climate change.
