Summary Statement

Review of sustainability assessment practice in Canada for new nuclear projects, focusing on on-going impact assessments across Canada.

Abstract

Canada’s nuclear sector is at a pivotal juncture, with new projects being explored to support clean energy goals and energy security. Ensuring these projects align with broader sustainability objectives as defined under the Canadian Impact Assessment Act requires robust assessment frameworks that go beyond traditional environmental impact assessment. This paper examines the application of sustainability assessment in the planning and development of new nuclear facilities in Canada, highlighting how such assessments can inform decision-making, enhance engagement, and support long term community well-being. Drawing on recent case studies across Canada, we explore practical approaches to integrating sustainability considerations within the impact assessment process for new nuclear projects. The findings underscore the potential for sustainability assessments to provide a structured, transparent, and participatory approach to nuclear project development, ultimately supporting projects that are resilient, socially acceptable, and environmentally responsible.
