Session: 533 - Psycho-Social Impact Assessment – Gauging effects of marginalisation

Status: pending

Summary Statement

This workshop session will provide participants with tools to better understand and more rigorously measure place-related concepts to provide a more systematic assessment of psycho-social impacts

Abstract

The ways people understand and bond with the “places” where they live can affect the likelihood and magnitude of psycho-social impacts caused by development processes. Psycho-social impacts can be among the most salient impacts to local residents from development processes, however impact assessment practitioners may struggle with defining and measuring this range of impacts. Important concepts and terminology from the scholarship of Sense of Place can help IA practitioners better understand how and why residents attach certain meanings and values to particular locales, why residents may or may not feel bonded to these locals, and why they may exhibit place-protective behaviors in the face of development.
Using real-life development examples, this workshop session will provide participants with tools to better understand and more rigorously measure place-related concepts, uncover contexts where psycho-social impacts can be anticipated, and provide a more systematic assessment of psycho-social impacts that may occur.
