Session: 715 - Professional Capacity Building and Certification As Tools for Building Stakeholder Confidence

A step-by-step example of implementing PRS and elevate ESIA: targeted training, ISO 17024 certification, and strategic outreach to boost credibility, consistency, and stakeholder trust
In response to growing environmental complexity and the urgent need for sustainable development, AQÉI has launched the firsts steps of a professional recognition system. The project aims to address persisting challenges like uneven study quality, extended timelines, and insufficient training. PRS tackles these issues through three transformative pillars. Training: this phase involved an in-depth analysis of university programs, with a focus on disruptive themes such as Indigenous perspectives, health, climate change, and sustainable development. Identified gaps led to the creation of targeted training modules designed to better align academic offerings with field needs. Operationalization: We explored several pathways to structure the PRS and ultimately chose to become a certified personnel certification body under ISO 17024. The organizational framework, implementation timeline, and budget were defined. Key steps include forming committees, developing ISO-compliant procedures, drafting supporting documents, and securing official recognition from the Canadian Standards Council. Awareness: To support the successful adoption and ownership of the PRS by members and stakeholders, we identified and developed a range of communication strategies and engagement tools. The PRS offers a wide range of benefits, including enhanced professional credibility and trust, improved quality and consistency in ESIA, expanded business opportunities, and international recognition for certified professionals. It also streamlines project approvals and fosters greater confidence among stakeholders
