Summary Statement

This presentation analyzes how SEIA addresses public access to environmental information, considering Escazú, mining certifications, and the potential role of artificial intelligence.

Abstract

Access to environmental information is a key pillar of the Escazú Agreement and a growing demand in socio-environmentally sensitive contexts, such as mining projects in Chile.
This presentation examines how Chile’s Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA) has responded to Escazú commitments since the agreement was signed in 2022, in connection with transparency requirements established by international certification standards such as IRMA, ICMM, and TSM.
Through a regulatory review and the analysis of recent mining projects assessed under SEIA, this work explores the mechanisms used to deliver environmental information to the public and the extent to which they align with international benchmarks.
The study also considers the potential role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing these processes—particularly in automating data validation, generating accessible and real-time information, and supporting digital platforms for environmental monitoring with a citizen-centered approach.
The Investigation concludes with recommendations to integrate AI-based tools within SEIA, aiming to strengthen environmental governance through greater transparency, traceability, and public participation.
