Session: 719 - Cultural Heritage: Current Trends and Best Practice

Status: pending

Summary Statement

This session presents a methodology for assessing ICH impacts by identifying key places and resources, integrating traditional ownership & customary use into internationally aligned cultural heritage.

Abstract

This workshop session will explore a practical methodology for assessing impacts to intangible cultural heritage (ICH) by identifying the geographically defined places and environmental resources—such as specific flora, fauna, and landforms—that are essential to its practice and transmission. Participants will examine how concepts such as traditional ownership and customary use rights should inform the identification and assessment of ICH resources and how disruptions to access, ecological integrity, and cultural ecosystem services can impact ICH resources. Emphasis will be placed on integrating these concepts into impact assessment frameworks that meet international standards for cultural heritage impact assessment.
