Session: 683 - Watershed Intelligence: Integrating Science and Engagement in Impact Assessments

Status: pending

Summary Statement

This presentation will explore the importance of partnerships to advance the integration of natural assets into the asset management planning process, using climate data to inform decision-making.

Abstract

While there are several robust, regional natural systems vulnerability assessments available to the City of Brampton, there is a need to downscale this information to inform the City's natural asset management planning process and other related plans, programs and policies.
The City of Brampton, in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is undertaking a Natural Systems Vulnerability Assessment to better understand how climate change is impacting its natural assets. Using a geospatial approach, climate vulnerable features and areas are being identified using an integrated, multi-criteria prioritization approach as identified in a regional Nature-Based Climate Solutions Siting Tool to highlight priority areas and management actions. The findings will be used to inform the City's natural asset management planning process. Through case studies, the project will develop condition scores for select natural assets, corporate/community level service goals, and lifecycle management strategies that can be consistently applied to natural assets across the City. This framework will inform future updates to the City's Asset Management Plans, ensuring natural assets are protected, enhanced, and managed.
In this session, participants will explore the importance of partnering with local conservation authorities to advance the integration of natural assets into the asset management planning process. Participants will also learn how the City is using regional and watershed-based climate data and science to help inform decision-making.
