Session: 666 - Strategic Environmental and Economic Assessment in Canada – Overview, Effectiveness and Challenges
Status: pending
Natural Resources Canada will present Strategic Environmental and Economic Assessment case studies to illustrate successes and challenges related to energy and natural resources proposals
In the Government of Canada, Strategic Environmental and Economic Assessment (SEEA) is a mandatory requirement for all plan, policy and program proposals to enhance the understanding and integration of environmental and economic effects in federal decision-making. SEEA places a special focus on climate change and biodiversity, with the aim of helping the federal government achieve its goals in multiple areas, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change, protecting biodiversity, and promoting economic growth.
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is a federal department working to improve the lives of Canadians by ensuring our country’s natural resources are developed in ways that are sustainable, competitive, and inclusive. NRCan plays a lead role in areas such as energy, forestry, mining, and earth sciences, and helps guide how these resources are managed across Canada. By virtue of the departmental mandate, NRCan regularly produces proposals related to natural resources and energy.
NRCan will showcase case studies with varying degrees of environmental and economic impacts to demonstrate the flexibility and scalability of SEEA. NRCan will also evaluate its implementation of SEEA to date, identifying its successes and challenges. The presentation will conclude with recommendations to improve SEEA implementation in order to better achieve its intended purpose of consistently and effectively integrating environmental and economic considerations into federal decision-making.
Matt Abramson is a Policy Analyst at Natural Resources Canada. He primarily works on Strategic Environmental and Economic Assessments and has a background in climate change management.
