Session: 700 - Indigenous-led and Jointly-led Regional Assessments in Canada
Status: pending
An overview of the challenges and lessons learned in developing a co-led regional assessment of the St. Lawrence River with the Mohawk Council of Kahanwà:ke and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.
The regional assessment of the St. Lawrence River (SLRA) is a regional assessment co-led by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC). With other interested First Nations located along the St. Lawrence from the border of Ontario and Quebec to the estuary, the SLRA is an opportunity to better understand the potential effects of past, present and future developments within the assessment area. The approach of the SLRA is not focused on a specific type of development (i.e. mining, wind) but instead on understanding the cumulative effects development has had on First Nations and how the health of the St. Lawrence River can be improved. This presentation will focus on the challenges and lessons learned in developing a regional assessment framework that addresses this goal and next steps for the SLRA.
