Session: 625 - Rethinking Stakeholder Engagement from the Accountability Lens
Status: pending
This presentation explores how accountability mechanisms and dispute resolution address miscommunication, mistrust, and power imbalances, promoting inclusive dialogue and technical clarity.
From a Dispute Resolution perspective, stakeholder engagement often reveals the deepest challenges of mistrust, communication breakdowns, and power asymmetries. The DR function’s experience demonstrates that many disputes originate in inadequate stakeholder engagement processes that leave communities without access to neutral, trustworthy information or the capacity to participate meaningfully. This presentation examines these challenges, facilitating dialogue in environments marked by power imbalances, unpacking technical issues to diverse audiences, and addressing deep-seated skepticism while emphasizing approaches that promote more equitable participation. Strengthening the skills, participation, and confidence of all stakeholders enhances the legitimacy and effectiveness of DR processes and contributes to more accountable and sustainable development outcomes.
