Abstract

A Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the Formalisation of Artisanal Small-Scale Mining was commissioned to respond to the ravaging havoc of illegal mining in Ghana. The SEA was funded by the World Bank. Completion of the report coincided with a new government administration, and the urgency for implementing the SEA’s sustainable solution outcomes got lost.

The presentation sheds light on the strategy bringing the SEA report to life in a story format, while avoiding any political and legal pitfalls and shifting the flow from hard data and over-narration, without sacrificing much accuracy.

The storybook retells the SEA successes in transforming illegal mining in an imaginary country. A groundbreaking translation of a typical technical SEA report into a captivating tale; for broad readership interest, education, enlightenment, and appreciation of all stakeholders to galvanize support for official action.
