Session: 527 - The importance of effective communication for Impact Assessments
Status: pending
This presentation explores how environmental issues in Romania are often misused to mask deeper project failures, highlighting case studies and strategies to counter misinformation in the digital age.
After the fall of communism, starting with the 90s, Romania has been a country trying to find its place in a developing Eastern Europe. With the integration in the European Union in 2007, development of projects, particularly transport infrastructure, has taken a center stage, and increasing pressure has been put on all stakeholders, from both the general public, and the press, to develop projects as fast and as cheaply as possible. With this, the spread of misinformation, especially in regards to the environment, has increased alarmingly. This presentation will analyse several case studies from Romania, where environmental issues were used as excuses for hiding the real problems in project development and maintenance, and will present possible solutions for guarding against misinformation in the era of never-ending scrolling and AI.
Silvia is an ecologist and environmental consultant focused on biodiversity and improving environmental outcomes in transport infrastructure projects.
