Abstract

Digital transformation in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is accelerating, but its full potential depends on robust data infrastructure and open biodiversity standards. This presentation explores how the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) infrastructure can underpin and scale digital EIA processes—from field data collection to strategic decision-making and sustainable investment.

By leveraging GBIF’s open data standards, APIs, and data, EIA practitioners can integrate biodiversity observations into interoperable systems that support transparent reporting, cumulative impact analysis, and adaptive management. Connecting EIA workflows with GBIF enhances data discoverability, reduces duplication, and aligns local observations within a global biodiversity context.

The session will showcase how linking EIA data to GBIF enables new value streams: informing Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) reporting, improving ESG indicators, and facilitating evidence-based project approvals.
This presentation positions GBIF as a digital backbone for next-generation EIA—empowering governments, developers, and investors to make better, data-driven decisions that align with global biodiversity and sustainability goals.
