Summary Statement

Making audits an instrument for forward -looking impact management

Abstract

When we hear the word ‘audit’ we think of an end tail of a development project, resettlement, construction, reviewing the results and outcomes of fait accompli. But what if audits were not only about assessing the past but about shaping the future of best practice assessment and management of development projects? This is what readiness audits are about. In transition from impact assessment to project implementation, readiness audits can be a valuable link and a window to a more effective and pre-emptive management of impacts. Using an example of a readiness audit approach to assess social/labor impacts on international lender financed projects, I will share an effective instrument of proactive management of E&S risks.
