The IAAC's Quebec Office will propose useful avenues for reflection for anyone working in a country where several environmental assessment regimes coexist.
Canada is a country made up of 10 provinces and 3 territories. Environmental jurisdiction is shared among levels of government. This requires rigorous public communication to maximize effective stakeholder participation. The public must be able to identify federal effects and possible conditions in IAAC decision statement for the impact assessment process to be successful.
The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) reviews major projects to support sustainable development, protect the environment and the rights of Indigenous peoples, with an emphasis on collaboration and meaningful participation.
Proposed questions:
• How can we effectively reach citizens who want to contribute to improving a project?
• How can we explain what is not taken into account in our assessment while still mobilizing meaningful participation?
• How can clear and targeted communications help restore public confidence in the process?
• How can we reduce public confusion between the different environmental assessment processes within the same state (with concrete examples and statistics)?
