Session: 622 - “Science isn’t just for scientists”: IA and advancing technical literacy
Status: pending
Explores how citizen science data can enhance impact assessments, with Canadian context and practical integration strategies.
Citizen science platforms such as iNaturalist, eBird, and NatureCounts are generating vast datasets on species distributions, habitat use, and ecological trends. These data sources are increasingly recognized for their potential to complement traditional field surveys and inform impact assessments (IAs). This poster explores how citizen science can enhance baseline data collection, identify species at risk, and support public engagement in the IA process. Drawing on Canadian experiences, the work highlights both the opportunities and limitations of integrating citizen-generated data into formal assessments. Key considerations include data quality, licensing, spatial bias, and regulatory acceptance. The poster also outlines practical strategies for incorporating citizen science into IA workflows, including partnerships with local naturalist groups, use of open data platforms, and validation protocols. In an era of increasing public scrutiny and misinformation, citizen science offers a promising avenue for democratizing environmental knowledge and strengthening the credibility of impact assessments.
