Summary Statement

Additional conservation actions can play a role beyond the mitigation hierarchy to achieve nature positive outcomes. We offer a useful framework to communicate biodiversity management.

Abstract

Additional Conservation Actions are an important component of the Mitigation Hierarchy and can be an effective tool for businesses seeking to enhance positive outcomes across sites, landscapes and value chains. With correct application, they have the potential to support impact mitigation efforts, contribute towards nature positive outcomes and engage with key stakeholders..

This presentation will share a guidance typology from the IMEC Nature Positive Working Group to define Additional Conservation Actions (ACAs) and Nature Positive Contributions. Practitioners can use the typology of ACAs to discuss examples of ACAs in practice, categorise ACAs as part of the nature positive attribution and rationale, understand the business driver for each ACA type, define where and how ACAs can be used effectively in different contexts and explore these use cases in the context of generating nature positive outcomes. We will also discuss the challenges of working with communities to understand important biodiversity management concepts and frame this as a tool that can be used to help communicate ACAs to affected communities.
