Session: 684 - Cumulative Effects Assessment: does it make a difference?

Status: pending

Summary Statement

This workshop aims to engage participants in a discussion of what is needed to make CEA deliver results on the ground, beyond the assessment.

Abstract

Cumulative effects assessment (CEA) dates back to the mid-1970. Although the legislation in North America, Europe and Australia, among other, requires the assessment of cumulative effects. the general understanding is that the quality of CEA needs to improve. However, not much is known about what happens after the assessment. Do the findings influence policy of management? Are the mitigations applied and prevent or manage the predicted effects? Do the findings trigger action and help improve the quality of the built and natural environment? What are the barriers and opportunities to make CEA a more effective instrument to materialize sustainable development? These are some of the questions that participants in this workshop can discuss to widen the understanding of how to advance the practice of CEA.
