The implementation of the Escazú Agreement must be a collective, multistakeholder effort. Examples of good practice, focusing on environmental information, participation, justice and protect
The presentation will provide an overview of how the Escazú Agreement is being implemented regionally and nationally since its entry into force with the support of ECLAC as Secretariat.
Trends, practical examples and good practices from across the region will be showcased on various pillars of the Agreement, evidencing its changemaking potential on the ground. Emphasis will be placed on collective and multi-stakeholder achievements from governmental and non-governmental actors that are making the Escazú Agreement a reality, moving from words to action.
Some of the common challenges encountered from a compared perspective as well as possible means to overcome them will likewise be analyzed, particularly in light of the current global and regional context. More specifically, opportunities to develop environmental information (PRTRs and EISs), participatory Environmental Impact Assessment processes, early response mechanisms to protect environmental defenders and national road maps for effective implementations of the Agreement will be explored.
Finally, the presentation will delve into the future outlooks of the Agreement: the road after COP-4, what lies ahead and ways to give the Agreement even greater traction to realize environmental democracy and human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean.
