Summary Statement

Practical insights from engagement with communities and special interest groups as related to the risk of oil spills and other unplanned events.

Abstract

Members of the public are often hyper-focused on the perceived high consequences of unplanned events. Although these events may be rare, they pose unique challenges for public engagement as they can dominate public discourse and polarize stakeholder conversations. This presentation will explore the intersection of risk science and practical engagement strategies in the oil and gas sector, drawing on international experience across diverse cultural and regulatory contexts. Participation in the panel will provide practical insights gained through over two decades of experience in a variety of contexts, including recent experience facilitating discussions about the risks of oil spills in Guyana.
