Summary Statement

This poster presents an assessment of Colombia’s environmental and social framework, its alignment with the World Bank’s ESF, and opportunities for strengthening country systems.


Abstract

As part of its sustainable development mandate, the World Bank supports countries in strengthening environmental and social systems through capacity building, transparency, and stakeholder engagement. In Colombia, a national framework exists to manage environmental and social risks. The World Bank conducted an Overview Assessment comparing this framework to its Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), identifying strengths, gaps, and recommendations to align Colombia’s systems with global standards. The poster will present: 1-Scope: This section will present the main scope of the OA in Colombia. 2-Methodology: Prepared between 2023 and 2025, the assessment was enriched through participatory discussions with stakeholders from government, private sector, academia, and civil society. 3- Main Findings: Colombia’s framework is strong for licensed projects, but oversight and stakeholder engagement can improve in unregulated sectors. 4-Operationalization: integration into ongoing legislative to strengthen the country framework; streamline requirements in Bank financed projects to enhance its use. 5- Examples: Input to the updated General Methodology for Environmental Studies by the Ministry of Environment; Use of Borrower frameworks in Bogotá Metro Line 1 – Phase, Plan Pazcífico 2.0, and Canoas WWTP.
